History

Santa Ana Ranch is Located in Deep South Texas, Northeast of Hidalgo County. The Ranch is located in the inital land grant called “Las Mestenas” obtained in the name of Vicente Hinojosa since 1794 from the Spanish Crown by ordinance of Carlos II.

The ranching business in the United States has evolved since the Spanish colonization. First cattle were brought in the early 1700’s. Later, in the early 1800’s, the Texas ranching started in the Rio Grande Valley setting the standard for ranching practices adopted across the American West. Examples of these ranches in South Texas are the King Ranch ( established in 1853 ) and the McAllen Ranch ( established in 1791 ).

The initial dominant cattle breed was Longhorn. Then, in 1940, the Santa Gertrudis breed was recognized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as the first breed developed in the United States. Tom Lasater, the beefmaster breeder founder, developed his breed since the 1930’s from systematic crossing of hereford, shorthorn and brahman cattle, and registered the breed in 1954. The beefmaster breed has expanded from South Texas to the rest of the state, country and several places in the world. Santa Ana Ranch invites you to share the passion for Polled Beefmasters.
